Before You Book

Yes. Tourists, including US citizens, can rent and drive a car in Morocco with their national driving licence, as long as they have held it for at least 2 years and it is valid until the return date. We recommend also carrying an International Driving Permit, which translates your licence and helps at police checkpoints. Bring your passport too — the minimum age is 21.

Yes — renting a car is worth it if you want to see more than one city, and driving is generally safe for tourists. A car is the easiest way to reach the Atlas Mountains, the desert and the coast at your own pace, and the motorways and main roads are in good condition. Drive carefully in busy city centres, respect speed limits (police checks are frequent) and avoid rural roads at night.

Morocco drives on the right, like France, Spain and the United States. Cars are left-hand drive, road signs are in Arabic and French, and the usual speed limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h on main roads and 60 km/h in towns.

Rent from a company that gives you a written contract with the price, the deposit and the insurance clearly stated before you pay. That is how we work: the full price and the deposit amount are confirmed on WhatsApp before you arrive, we check the car together at pickup and take photos of its condition and fuel level, and we compare them at return, so you only pay what the contract says. The deposit is refunded when the car comes back in good condition. Avoid street touts, and never leave your passport as a deposit.

Tourists get around Morocco by train, bus, taxi or rental car — and a rental car is the most flexible. Trains, including the Al Boraq high-speed line between Tangier, Rabat and Casablanca, are good between big cities but do not reach Agadir, Essaouira or the desert, where CTM and Supratours buses fill some gaps. Petits taxis work inside cities and grands taxis between towns, but you share them and must agree the price. A car lets you reach the Atlas, the Sahara and small villages on your own schedule.
